ADVANCED EDUCATION:
Docent Training and Digging Deeper

  • Docent Training Course

Our certified Docent Training Course has been preparing passionate gardens to become educated garden docents for more than a decade. This intensive four-week program focuses on the horticultural heritage and history of the South Carolina Lowcountry with plant identification and terminology rounding out the itinerary.

With instruction from renowned Charleston horticulturalist Susan Epstein and gardening professional Beverly Rivers, this esteemed program has become known as Charleston’s most in-depth garden docent training program.

All graduates of the program are given first priority for all garden tour and volunteer opportunities and receive a certificate and docent lanyard upon completion.

  • Digging Deeper

Digging Deeper is our advanced education or ‘graduate level’ follow up course to our Docent Training program. The class meets four times throughout the month of March on Tuesday afternoons with an optional field trip during the course’s run.

Taught by Docent Course instructors Susan Epstein and Beverly Rivers, the mission of our Digging Deeper course is to discuss current gardening initiatives and bring awareness to the mandates that are asking us to rethink previous truths about the way we garden.

The course digs into historical agricultural practices and transitions into the current science of today’s best practices of garden management along with pruning, disease control and garden design principals and more.
