CHS Hort Lecture: Thomas Woltz

Our CHS Hort Lecture series returns to the Charleston Museum on Monday, May 9 at 6:30 for our final lecture of the season.

We are pleased to welcome Landscape Architect Thomas Woltz, owner of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects.

Over the past two decades of practice Thomas and his team have infused narratives of the land into the places where people live, work, and play, engendering stewardship and inspiring connections between people and the natural world.

Woltz was educated at the University of Virginia and holds master’s degrees in Landscape Architecture and Architecture. He also holds an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the State University of New York, Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse. He was recognized with the Land for People Award by the Trust for Public Land in 2019 and as one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company in 2017. Woltz currently serves on the Boards of Directors of the Cultural Landscape Foundation and the University of Virginia School of Architecture Foundation.

At present, Thomas is leading NBW in the design of significant public landscapes across the United States, Canada, and New Zealand, including Rothko Chapel and Memorial Park in Houston, Centennial Park in Nashville, Cornwall Park in Auckland, and Mt. Cuba Center and Winterthur in Delaware.

Romney Urban Garden Workday

Join us at 222 Romney Court on Saturday, April 23 for our monthly RUG Workday! Bring your garden gloves and come mingle with other garden enthusiasts while helping to maintain one of Charleston’s beautiful urban gardens.

We are thrilled to be receiving a generous donation of two Big Yellow Bags from Soil3 to help us rejuvenate the long garden beds! We need you to come out and help us move and spread it!

This month we will have a special presentation all about growing and using herbs with Sandy Pait. Sandy will also bring some treats to enjoy that use herbs that thrive in Charleston!

As an author, photographer, naturalist and preservationist, Charlotte uses her photography as a springboard for sharing and storytelling. Digging Deeper Course

Many CHS Hort members who completed our highly respected and popular Docent Course have requested a follow up course. For the third year now we are pleased to offer our advanced educational course Digging Deeper. This course will meet four times in the month of March 2022 on Tuesday afternoons with an optional add-on event throughout the course’s run. Romney Urban Garden Workday

This month, we are excited to welcome Edelle Gaillard and Reagan Pickering from New Israel Reformed Episcopal Church (NIREC) to give a brief history of the garden and why it is so important to the community today. We will also have coffee from Harbinger Cafe on hand to keep you warm!

This month we are spreading mulch and preparing the garden for spring! This is a great service project to include your children or grandchildren - they are GREAT weed pullers and love all the worms in our compost bin!

November Lecture: Molly Hendry

Molly Hendry toggles the worlds of design and plants as both a trained horticulturist and landscape architect. As the Garden Assessment Project Leader for the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens she is facilitating a comprehensive review of more than 2 dozen individual gardens that are featured on the 67.5 acre property. She is also a key support player in the renewal of the Gardens' master plan, in addition to managing design development and review of ongoing garden projects. In this lecture, Molly will share about her time spent in England at Great Dixter, and how those experiences influenced her design aesthetic when applying to her southern garden designs.
